You can open a file via the File/Open menu or by simply dragging and dropping it onto the programs Edit window. You can drag and drop folders, files or their shortcuts. You may open multiple files simultaneously, which you access via their respective tabs. You can even open hundreds of files so long as your computers memory can handle their sizes.
When you have many files open at the same time, you may not see all their tabs. However, you can view a list of all file names when you click the green down arrow to the right of the tab bar.
If you would like to open a link file itself instead of its target file or folder, then you need to press and hold the Alt key as you drag and drop the shortcut. Please note that you cannot open the link file via the File/Open menu.
