ERAM is a tool for creating an open source RAM disk that you can use for storing files.

Faster load times result when accessing large files, and many programs are speeded up when required files load from the RAM disk. Unlike your system's HDD, your RAM drive accesses the data from the memory address - no head or optical eye movement required. It is especially convenient as a separate environment for temporary files when you are benchmarking and testing programs.

Download and install 32- or 64-bit ERAM. Installation might possibly involve disabling Driver Signature Enforcement.

A 1GB on a 32-bit OS and 4GB on a 64-bit OS on an R: drive or Z: drive - depending on your system - will be created. Press WIN+R to change the size by running eram.cpl. You can also customize permissions to share files with others.

Installing ERAM will enable you to:

  • Speed uploading and running software, especially graphics applications and games
  • Provide faster loading of large files, image, video, and audio editing, making copies of disks and web surfing
  • Store for web browser cache and temp files separately
  • Improve speed of software compilers and SETI processing
  • Use as faster swap space
  • Run custom applications requiring speed to process high I/O, bandwidth and security
  • Automatically wipe any critical information in the case of a power loss
  • Back up to image on shutdown.

ERAM is open source from Hideaki Okubo. It uses paged/non-paged memory and supports all recent versions of Windows. Building upon or incorporating the code can be accomplished using the Windows Driver Kit.
