Language is a funny thing. It's at the heart of discourse, of course, but few people really consider it to be fun. There are some fantastic language games out there, though, that take one's love of words and make that knowledge a little more competitive. WinGhost is one such game, leveraging a player's word knowledge against a computer in a race to force the other into making a four or more letter word. As a game concept, it's novel and the execution is excellent.

WinGhost is at its best when you've got a little vocabulary knowledge to back yourself up. The first few turns are probably the easiest, as you carefully start to construct a trap for the computer. After that, though, the game gets a little more tense - you'll wonder exactly what's going to happen next and hope that you haven't committed a huge mistake.

If there's a flaw to be mentioned, it's that there's just not much game here. It's a fabulous proof of concept and a great piece of entertainment, but it's not the kind of thing you're going to spend a great deal of time with. If the worst thing you can say about a game is that you wish there was more, though, that's probably not the worst thing ever.

Is WinGhost going to change the world of gaming? Probably not. It is, however, incredibly good at doing what it set out to do - helping players have a good time. It's a clever little game that does everything right, and its only real fault is that there's just not more to the program. This game is a great example of how even a stripped-down program can be fun for those who are willing to give it a chance. Give WinGhost a shot if you're looking for a good way to challenge yourself when you've got some free time.
