There are many audio and Internet radio players with varying capabilities. Tray Radio is a lightweight application with great potential, as you can also use it to play audio files.

Using Tray Radio

Tray Radio installed easily, giving us the option to create a desktop shortcut during the installation process. True to its name, the application only displayed an icon on the system tray when we launched it. By default, right-clicking the icon opened its menu while left-clicking displayed the equalizer and play controls, but we had the option to configure mouse click behavior.

The 10-band graphic equalizer gave us the option to configure six presets, making it easy for us to change the audio quality by simply selecting the desired preset. On the lower right side of the equalizer window was a button that allowed us to select the audio file we wanted to play. It was compatible with different audio formats, including MP3, M4A, WMA and FLAC.

The program displayed details of the audio it was playing above the system tray for a couple of seconds and kept showing its title on the system tray as it played. It did the same with radio stations, first displaying the name of the selected station briefly then the title of what was played on the system tray. We could choose the position of the infobar and its text and background colors. Alternatively, we could turn off the infobar if we did not want the program to display the pop-up details.

Placing the mouse pointer over the program icon also displayed information about what was playing, including the title, audio format and bitrate.

Tray Radio came with preset radio stations from three countries: Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The stations were categorized into top 20 most played, national, regional and Internet. We could also add stations manually by providing their respective names and links.

We could record what was playing online for later listening offline, and the program gave the option to select where we wanted to save the recordings.

Conclusion

If you want a simple application that you can use to play both audio files on your computer and Internet radio stations, then Tray Radio is a good choice. It comes with preset stations and allows you to add others manually. You can change audio quality with the 10-band graphic equalizer, and you can record content to listen to offline.
