Using MediaInfo Portable

We downloaded the archive and extracted its content to our desired destination from where we run the executable file. When we launched the freeware app for the first time, it opened the preferences panel.

In addition to setting the language and output format, we activated explorer extensions and explorer tooltip. We also had the option to customize language and different viewing formats. When we clicked OK, the main program interface appeared, giving us the option to select an audio or a video file.

We opened a video file, and the program showed us its format, file size and duration as well as the numbers and types of video and audio streams it contained under "Container and general information". Other details we received included overall bit rate mode, overall bit rate, encoded date and tagged date.

There were also links taking us to websites with information about the video and audio streams. On the left part of the user interface were buttons for selecting required multimedia or folder, exporting customized format, setting preferences, contacting developer, changing the means of viewing information and visiting Tekronics website.

We could view multimedia details in different formats, including basic, which is the default view, sheet, tree, text, HTML, XML, MPEG, PBCore, EBUCore, FIMS and custom views. We could also display the information depending on our system's specifications. Different views gave us varying amounts of information. As far as visibility and aesthetics were concerned, we preferred HTML view, but different people have their own tastes.

We could export the details in the selected view format for later viewing using the default programs for opening the formats. We could also use MediaInfo Portable for debugging purposes.

The features we had activated during the initial launch allowed us to access the program via the context menu. Right clicking on a media file enabled us to open the program and view the file's information straight away.

Conclusion

MediaInfo Portable is a handy freeware for viewing technical data about your media files. It will not only help you to get more information about the files but also give you the opportunity to learn about their formats. You can easily add it to or remove it from the context menu.
