Many people use mobile devices for most of their daily tasks, but they often find it difficult if not impossible to work with some file types. For example, relatively few devices can edit or even view spreadsheets. Thankfully, you can now perform both tasks so long as you have a web browser, a feature that nearly all the devices have. All you need is SSuite Basic-Math Spreadsheet, a lightweight application that allows you to open, edit and save spreadsheets right from your web browser.

Using SSuite Basic-Math Spreadsheet

We downloaded and extracted the program files to our desired destination from where we launched the application without the need for installation. We launched the application by clicking the SSuiteBasicMath.htm file, which loaded fast. The opened spreadsheet had 100 rows and 26 columns, which could be adjusted from the source code to fit different computer systems.

The application allowed us to either open an existing document or create a new one from scratch. We had the option to create either a .bms or .csv file. However, we could not open .xls and .xlsx files. If we wanted to work with files in these formats, then we first saved them as .csv files.

The program featured 'undo' and 'redo' functions as well as the ability to change font, font and background colors and other common formatting options.

Due to its simplicity, we found it difficult to perform some tasks. For example, we had to select a cell, click the 'Set column width' button and specify the desired size in pixels. We could not simply double click on the column's edge to fit content.

On the other hand, editing cell content was as easy as clicking and making necessary edits. Doing that with conventional spreadsheet programs replaces everything. We could also perform basic math functions like finding the sum, average, minimum and maximum values of specified cells. We entered start and end cells to perform the calculations after clicking the calculator-like button on the tool bar.

The software draws on the power of HTML5 browsers to offer such functions as find, spell check, print and print preview.

Conclusion

While SSuite Basic-Math Spreadsheet is not the only program you can use to work with spreadsheets via a web browser, you can use it completely offline. The online applications are hidden behind firewalls and login prompts where you are often required to pay for more features. The free and cross-platform software is ideal for cell phones, tablets and computers.
