Free to play games are slowly but surely starting to become a normal part of the gaming culture. At one point, you could honestly expect one of these games to be nothing more than a novelty - a Farmville or a Candy Crush that really just wants to take your money and be done with it. Now, free to play is everywhere, even in games that would otherwise bear an AAA title. While it's fairly normal for MMORPGs, for example, to hit the F2P mechanics pretty hard, it's a little bit less normal to see it in other settings. That's what makes Warframe at once so surprising and so welcome.

Warframe is a F2P third person action game. The easiest point of comparison would probably be to Destiny, though Warframe does precede the game by a bit. The player takes control of one of the Tenno, a race of warriors who use robotic Warframes to fight a number of evil enemies. The appeal of the game is largely based on playing a robot ninja who can deal devastating amounts of damage at any given point. The game itself is loosely connected to the little-known Dark Sector, but might as well be an original IP.

This game is the absolute pinnacle of F2P. Every game out there should take a page from its book. There are tons of microtransactions available in the game, but players absolutely don't need to spend a penny if they don't feel like it. Paying real-world money just speeds up the processes that are able to be accomplished by free to play players with some time and effort. Unlike most games that boast that fact, Warframe actually delivers on the promise of keeping a relatively small gap between paying players and those who play for free.

Mechanically, the game is a joy to play. It definitely takes some time to get used to movement and shooting, but one can become a tornado of death once everything clicks into place. There are certainly some warframes that make the game easier than others, but the game does mostly feel like it comes down to the skill of the individual player. Movement definitely needs to be highlighted as well, as there are few games that match the ease of traversal.

There are always annoyances in any game, though. How good you are in Warframe will eventually depend on your gear, which tends to come in drops or through money. There are times when it can feel like getting a new warframe or accomplishing something is blocked by an unwillingness to pay, or at least an unwillingness to spend too much time doing something repetitive. These problems hit most games, but they feel especially jarring here.

Warframe is a very good game and a spectacular F2P platform. It does so much right that it's almost a required download for anyone who enjoys third person action. It may not be the perfect game, but it definitely seems like a step in the right direction.
