If you have many digital photos on your computer, you may find it difficult to manage them without a third party application dedicated to the task. A good program you can use is digiKam. The advanced and free photo management software organizes photos into albums that you can sort in different ways. It uses KDE Image Plugin Interface (KIPI) that provides many added functions. KIPI creates a common plugin infrastructure that various KDE graphical applications can share.

digiKam Features

  • Organize collection of photos
  • Import pictures
  • Edit and enhance photos
  • View items
  • Create slideshows, calendar, etc.
  • Share creations

Using digiKam

When we launched digiKam for the first time, we selected the folders where we wanted the software to organize our photos. We could choose different types of storage media, including local folders, removable drives and network shares.

The software made it easy to search our collection of photos. We could specify the conditions we wanted to use to filter the pictures, including date, rating, labels, orientation, width, height, aspect ratio, pixel size, file format, color depth, modification, digitization and size among others.

Picture folders and sub-folders appeared on the left pane, and clicking a sub-folder displayed thumbnails of the contained pictures on the upper part of the main, central pane. When we clicked on a thumbnail, the full-size image preview appeared below the thumbnails. On the right side of the program window were respective properties for the file, image, photograph and digiKam itself.

The name of the selected photo appeared on the lower left part of the user interface, including its position and the total number of photos. We could zoom in or out of pictures to have a better look at the details on a specific part or view the whole picture respectively. The zooming buttons were on the lower right corner of the program window.

The digiKam photo editor provided us with several tools to transform and enhance our pictures. Apart from performing such basic transformations as rotating and flipping images, we could adjust their colors, brightness, sharpness, noise level and contrast among other features. If we did not want to adjust individual features, we simply used the auto correction feature.

We connected the software to our camera and previewed photos before downloading the ones we wanted. It performed auto-transformations on the fly as it downloaded the images.

The Light Table tool allowed us to review our work to ensure we got the best quality. By dragging pictures to the Light Table, we only touched up the specific areas that needed improvement.

Conclusion

digiKam is a powerful photo management program that provides you with a full suite of tools for editing and organizing your digital pictures. The software automatically scans metadata from added images and creates relevant information in its database. You can personalize your photos by adding Idea and tags.
